Construction
Tackles wound pain
WHRU Study1. Pain associated with the wound was significantly reduced (p<0.05) corresponding to a greater than 50% reduction in the median visual scale pain score. WHRU 2007
14 day, single-centre, prospective, non-randomised, non-blinded pilot observational clinical trial involving 10 individuals who had venous or mixed aetiology leg ulcers that had persisted for at least 3 months where the wound area had not changed by more than 25% during the previous month. Various studies have shown hydrogel dressings have the ability to inhibit proteolysis, resulting in the reduction in MMPs (in vitro) and wound pain.1 A subsequent evaluation2 was conducted using 11 participants (8 females, 3 males) at The Wound Healing Research Unit, Cardiff University, UK. Despite undergoing up to 2 years of wound management with other dressings, all patients showed a significant improvement in terms of reduction of slough and increase in granulation tissue within just 14 days of using Gel 502 Dressings.
MMP Modulation
MMPs (Matrix Metallo Proteinases) are enzymes which clear away debris in the wound, including dead tissue. But when MMP levels are too high, they damage healthy cells and tissue. Chronic wounds have significantly higher levels of MMPs than acute wounds, which in part explains why they take much longer to heal.
In several separate studies, the Pro-ionic™ copolymer system in this product has been demonstrated in-vitro to be a powerful protease modulator (MMP-9, MMP-2, Human Neutrophil Elastase). This suggests that it may have a beneficial action by reducing the detrimental effects of proteolytic enzymes in vivo, and may explain the consistently positive clinical results with dressings based on Pro-ionic™ co-polymers.
Improved Absorption
Unlike typical sheet hydrogels (non-ionic systems), Gel 502 is based on an ionic polymer system. Among other properties, it’s therefore super-absorbent.
The result? A reduced risk of maceration if exudate levels increase in use.
Up to 91% inhibition of HuNE activity in 24h
Human Neutrophil Elastase. (p<0.001) data on file.
Management of wound bacteria

Our hydrogel polymers are able to absorb micro-organisms from the surface where they remain viable for varying periods of time.
The ease of recovery of the absorbed bacteria is dependent on the method used. Very extensive crushing (disruption of the gel structure) of the gel is required to recover the bacteria.
In the clinical setting, this capability - to absorb the bacteria within the gel polymer structure - may enable Pro-ionic™ hydrogels to significantly reduce bacteria levels at the skin or wound surface.
